In total, Houston has 19 school districts, ranking seventh largest in the U.S. Indeed, by Texas standards, their territory is the largest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) is the official name of the aforementioned 19 schools in Houston, which has 100 campuses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also about 300 private schools in the city that are accredited by the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is impossible not to mention the independent schools of the Houston metropolitan area. They are subordinated to the Roman Catholic archdiocese. One can easily guess that they all have a religious vector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official date of foundation of the school is 1978, although its history began a little earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most likely, the final countdown of the school’s chronicle can be considered 1946. We will tell you what exactly happened during these thirty years. No matter how proud one may be of this school, the history of its birth is colored in gloomy colors. The driving force, if it can be called that, in the school\u2019s founding was racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact is that in the 50s, there was a case when a student named Heman M. Sweatt was denied admission to the University of Texas School of Law because of his black skin color. The case did not go unnoticed by the city authorities and society. The situation was particularly closely monitored by Thurgood Marshall, director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Mr. Thurgood defended the young man’s rights in court. This later led to the establishment of a separate law school for blacks. Soon after, the Texas State University for Negroes was founded in Houston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1951, the name of the institution was first changed to Texas Southern University. Its law school was originally based in Austin but later moved to the university’s campus in Houston. 27 years later, after numerous legal and juridical discussions and disagreements, the Thurgood Marshall School of Law (TMSL) at Texas Southern University appears in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school has gained a great reputation. Various indicators and statistics are a clear confirmation of this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • In the 20s of the XXI century, the school was repeatedly named the best in Texas for training Latino and African American lawyers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The school is ranked in the top 5 in the U.S. for training professionals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • In the context of training graduates of Mexican descent, it is among the top 25 in America.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • 50% of all students are African American. Only 5% of the total are Asian.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The school’s library has over 350,000 volumes of various publications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    All students of the TMSL receive master’s and doctoral degrees. The school is a member of the Association of American Law Schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It is impossible not to mention that the educational institution is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
