In 1960, Houston, the Baptist General Convention of Texas established the Houston Baptist College. In 1973, it became a university. This private educational institution focuses not just on high-quality preparation for future careers, but also on fostering Christian values in students. Despite the fact that the educational institution is Christian, there are students of various religions, which adds diversity to the University. Degrees and programs

Initially, Houston Baptist College offered only a Bachelor of Arts degree with academic courses in Christianity, fine arts, languages, natural sciences, mathematics and social sciences. In 1964, It started preparing specialists in the fields of education and psychology, and two years later business and economics were added to the list. In 1969, the College became the alma mater for future nurses.

When the college gained university status, the educational and methodological departments were entirely reorganized into independent colleges. The old structure of eight divisions was replaced by five colleges led by deans. Specifically, the H. B. Smith College of General Studies, the College of Business and Economics, the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Fine Arts and Humanities and the College of Science and Health Professions were formed. Soon after, the College of Nursing and the College of Science and Mathematics were established.

In 2007, Honors College was established, with the purpose of testing the finest students during an intensive program. Students at this college can pursue any available major or minor. They must complete an intense course of study and write a thesis to meet the requirements for an honors degree. The year also saw the introduction of Philosophy as a new major.

As of August 2023, Houston Christian University offers a wide selection of more than one hundred undergraduate, career-preparation and master’s degree majors in fields such as biology, chemistry, film, computer science, law, engineering, cybersecurity, finance, graphic design, history, management, marketing, music, nursing, philosophy, political science and more.

In 1967, English majors initiated a study abroad program. Following the initial launch in England, the initiative was then extended to Mexico, the Middle East and Europe. Study abroad and academic exchange programs primarily include an interdisciplinary summer course on culture and human experience provided by the School of Humanities, an annual international trip coordinated by the Archie W. Dunham College of Business and a nursing exchange program with Robert Gordon University in Scotland.

Sports teams

Houston Christian University’s sports teams are known as the “Huskies”. The students of this institution compete in 17 University sports, including baseball, basketball, cross-country, soccer, golf, track and field, beach volleyball, softball and others.

The University gives numerous scholarships to students for remarkable achievements, talent, leadership and athletic ability, making this college financially affordable when compared to other private universities in the United States.
